2010 Maitland Steamfest - The Great Train Race
Submitted by Philip M. Hicks on 11th January 2012
Here is the view from one of the other trains. The one hauled by #3526 What I didn't know when I sent the first clip was that there are two DH Tiger Moths flying in the race as well! The crews are really floging the locos! Especially the #3265, thats the one with smaller wheels! They are working really hard and those NSWGR coaches are heavyweights! Phil H. Oz

Hi Phil,
Could you imagine the powers that be doing this on the East Coast Main Line in the UK?
The trouble would be the trespass problem here, not so much from the railway photographer, but Joe Public and his two kids. Most responsible photographers stay on the correct side of the fence.
Keep well, Phil,
Regards,
Vaughan.
Hi Phil,
An amusing thought came into my scrambled eggs after watching your video, what about as a precursor to the opening of HS2 we had the second instalment of the race to the north (well Birmingham anyway) With Heats, quarters, semis and the final on official opening day. A handicap system agreed by all the political parties (after a Public enquiry, three elections, six civil wars and an edict from Brussels)
Ah well it seemed like a good idea at the time.
Banksman
HI ,Banksman You should have stuck with the scrambled eggs!!! The mooney (excuse the undeliberate spelling mistake) for the HS2 would be better spent on upgrading
our existing system and rolling stock. Pete
I totally agree with Pete, it seems like a great waste of money to build HS2, just to save a few minutes from Brum to London, (if one is in that much of a hurry to get to London - then catch an earlier train!).
Vaughan.
Hi all, I'm glad you seemed like the Great Train Race. For your race to Brum though you would have to use redundant Harrier Jump jets, Tiger Moths couldn't keep up! However my question is - I thought the UK was super broke! How can they afford flash new railways with lots of tunnels they are talking about? It must be all a subtefuge to cover up even bigger problems.
Vaughan, you might well be right when talking about the UK's railway trespass problems, if you look closely at those videos you will see hundreds of spectators on all the bridges and stations but they are all well behaved! That section of railway is an extremely busy line with dozens of huge 4000ton plus coal trains every day, they certainly worked hard to fit the race in! Incidently that is not the first time a three train run has been staged in Australia - back in the 1990's in Victoria they ran two broad gauge Vic Rail trains alongside a standard gauge train on part of the line between Melborne and Sydney. The standard gauge loco was #3801 and the Vic Rail locos were an R class and a K class loco.
