44871 & 45407 at Birkett Common

Taken on 28 January 2012

The Eden Valley was full of low mist pretty much from Carlisle to Kirkby Stephen, making the choice of locations to photograph limited. At Birkett, the mist came and went several times and looked like it was here to stay until the last minute when 44871 and 45407 passed by in impressive style.

To the right of 44871, the upper white band is snow on the fells and the lower white band is mist.

Yet another cracker!!

A really well defined shot, framed by the curve of the wall and with light visible under the wheels, excellent
smoke, good sky, and all the train in shot. Perfect,Well done Best Regards Pete

Ian
It doesn't get any better than this, well done, I want more!! Thinking of changing your camera?
Cheers

Magic!

Yes a new camera is on the cards I think. My 300D has a mark on the sensor so most shots need it removed in Photoshop, which gets a bit frustrating!

Ian
It has to be said that you'll be hard pushed to up the standard of the end product!
I was told some time ago by a recognised bird photographer friend that the glass was the most important part of the equation, and have invested in one L lens to date, it appears to be good advice for me anyway.
Not much you can do about the marked sensor though, is it to be a 550 or 600?
I hear the loco turning problem on this coast line has been resolved?
Cheers

Probably a 550D as the features the 600D has over it aren't ones I'm particularly interested in.

There are ongoing talks I believe to install turning facilities at Workington as an alternative to Sellafield. It certainly sounds promising for potential steam on the Cumbrian Coast next year.

I opted for a 500D over the 550D for the exact same reasons!!, although a top deal on cost helped. Good turning news for sure! I hear that the turning facilities are possibly already there? Good choice on the camera, what lens will you be using out of interest?

I'll probably keep the standard lens I use on my 300D.

Super couple of photos, Ian. Regarding new camera's, I agree with George V, it's what you put on the front that really counts. You can have the most expensive camera, and put a piece of cheap glass in front and you'll get poor results.

A few hundred quid squandered on what I thought were good lenses says that quality of lens means a great deal. I've bought and sold a few on e bay and am getting the message now. A switched on person on the blunt end helps too! It's been quite a learning curve for an old codger like me, but I'm getting there learning from mistakes. Much like buying cheap boots for your car really!
