BR [W] Small Tanks [4]

Taken on 21 June 1957

Hello - Another small tank for you. #1400 also shunting in the North yards at Swindon Junction. The little tank must be eking out time before going into the works for overhaul. She's very careworn in the original BR livery for tank engines - black unlined with the ferret and dart board insignia. This type of tank was not usually to be seen attached to a shunters truck as her smaller size and larger wheels than a pannier tank would make moving a larger cut of wagons a bit difficult.
The adhesion weight available would be a bit low as well, about 28 tons for the 0 - 4 - 2T against 49 tons for a pannier tank! Not to mention only 60% of the TE of a pannier as well! Station pilot yes! Shunter? Well a bit unsuited I think, the shedmaster must have been a bit desparate that day! At Swindon? Enjoy a picture from the past. Regards, from Phil H. Leura. Oz.
