Steam Box

Taken on 22 May 1958

Hello Guys - I wasn't to great with my panning, I don't think my camera would be that fast either. #6999 'Capel Dewi Hall' is almost side on and going at a good clip up towards Patchway Tunnel as she passes Cattybrook brickworks just about one mile East of Pilning Station with an express most likely a Cardiff to Salisbury and Portsmouth. She would work right through to Salisbury and be relieved by an Southern Region loco there. I hope you're still enjoying my old photos. My regards to all, Phil H. Leura. Oz.

Hello Phil And why wouldn't we be? all your older B&W photos are ok with me; but then I'm slightly biased as being a G W R fan I will have to look up around there to see whats left.
Many thanks Ant

I don't quite know why my brother is such a 'Gold Top' fan (I have conceded the use of capitals for Gold Tops) He was brought up under the sight and sound of the LMS. it must have been all those family holidays from Snow Hill to Paddington and seeing the model of the KIng in the Glass Case. Have you got any photos of proper locos, ie The Black 5-- especially 45349 from which I have the builder's plate and an increasing collection of photos of it, some 25 obtained this last 2 years despite a 45 year gap since it was withdrawn from 5B in Nov. 1967!
Regards Pete, N. Wales

Hello Ant and Pete - Do I detect a little bit of sibling rivalry here? Did you realise, Pete - by calling Ant a Gold Top you have acknowledged him [ and by inference the GWR ]to be the cream! Gold tops were the top of the best milk bottles back in the days of glass, maybe sometimes red tops [ heated copper ? ]. Railway loyalties back in mine and perhaps your youth, largely grew from which railway was dominant in ones city of residence. I can understand your divided loyalties due your living with the LMS and GWR so close in proximity in the Birmingham / Coventry / Leamington area. Never mind, I will make my next post just for you Pete - a Black 5. Look for it soon! Regards,Phil H. Leura. Oz.
