In The Narrows.

Over in the United States everything is done on a big scale - even the heritage railways (sorry, railroads).
Ex Denver and Rio Grande Western 2-8-2 class K36 number 488 is seen leaving what is known as "The Narrows" on her run from Chama, New Mexico, to Antonito, Colorado.
This is on the Cumbres and Toltec Railroad, and runs on a gauge of 3 ft. The class K36 locos, although narrow gauge, are more powerful than our 'Britannia' class!
The total length of the line is about 64 miles. It is not possible to do a complete end to end return journey by train in one day. The best way to see the line is to travel one way by train, and then catch a bus back. I took the photo in the summer of 1994, when the temperature was in the high 90's.

Hi Vaughan
What truly wonderful picture. These narrow gauge locos just seem just ooze power. You certainly have travelled far and wide, what with the USA and I seem to remember some lovely pictures from Sweden.

Hi Andy,
Yes, just lucky I guess.
Regards,

Hello all!
I have just been informed by my friend Bob, that this photograph, and the other recent posting of "Meat Loaf..." were taken in 2007 - silly old me!
My first visit to the USA was in 1994 on an organised railtrip. But this visit in 2007 was made with Bob, and we decided to do our own thing. So we hired a car (Ford Mustang!) at Denver, and drove all round Colorado and New Mexico visitng as many narrow gauge lines as possible.
I will try to did out a few more soon.
