Old Timer at Gorton.
Submitted by vaughan on 31st August 2011
On a trip to Manchester back in the early 1960's, I obtained a shed permit for Newton Heath (26A) and Gorton (39A). Here at Gorton was a wonderful collection of locos (mostly stored or withdrawn) ranging from ex GCR 2-8-0 ROD's to 4-4-2 Atlantic tank class C13's, and to this 1878 built Johnson Midland class 1F 0-6-0 number 41702. Note the framing around the cab to take a storm sheet, much needed in her very open cab!

Hello Vaughan - two more interesting historical posts from you, great! This loco was a real old timer! # 41702 hardly seems to have been altered since she was built and into service on 31/03/1879! She was withdrawn on the 31/07/1962 which makes her service 83 years long! Her last shed was 39A Gorton, where you photographed her. She was cut up at Derby in January 1963. One of the class is preserved I believe. Regards from Phil H. Leura. Oz.
Hi Phil. 41708, with a 'full' cab is perserved, as a static exhibit, at Barrow Hill Roundhouse, Chesterfield.
