Shakespeare Express

Going back a few years, when Flying Scotsman was in it's correct livery, and before the addition of German style smoke deflectors and double chimney. We see her departing from London Marylebone on a very cold winters morning sometime in the 1980's (I think!). The train is the Shakespeare Express bound for Stratford on Avon.

Great photo Vaughan and so much better in black and white.

Like you, Scotsman to me should be single chimney, no smoke deflectors and LNER apple green as it was in the 70's and 80's. If the smoke deflectors and chimney are to stay it should be in BR livery.

Everything about Flying Scotsman seems to go against the NRM's policy for an authentic loco, so why should the preferential treatment be given to 4472?

These days it is just a mish-mash of an A3, which is a real shame for such an iconic loco.

Rather like 6100 Royal Scot, in it's present livery of crimson. She never did carry that livery in her rebuilt form. Also that 8F in crimson.
But, I suppose, if you own a loco, you can paint it sky blue pink if that's what turns you on!
Vaughan.

Very true, the owner has the choice at the end of the day. I seem to remember there being a rumour that Scots Guardsman may come out in bright yellow to shut the purists up!

6100 I did not like at first sight, although having compared with Eric Treacy's photo's of Scots in LMS black, bar the red (or is it pink?!) livery, Royal Scot is pretty accurate. If you were to take 6100 in black & white, it would be hard to tell the difference - so for me I prefer 6100, with the deflectors off and the crimson livery I can live with. 4472 just doesn't look right unless it's in complete silhouette!

The 8F, the least said the better!

Some inaccurate liveries for me are improvements. 80135 on the NYMR in brunswick green for one. How many other black standard tanks are there? It's also a livery the loco could quite easily have carried even if it didn't.

I'm not sure, but didn't some of the 80xxx standard tanks carry brunswick green for a time? I know that some 82xxx tanks did come in brusnwick green.
Vaughan.

I've seen pictures of the 82XX in green, but I think the 80XX were always black. They quite easily could have also been green though.

Private owners as Ian C. states can paint their locomotives in any livery of their choice. However when the owner is the country via the NRM the locomotive should be as authentic as possible. That means to me, the livery and all the features of the locomotive. eg. If Scotsman runs currently with a double chimney and German style smoke deflectors it should be painted in the correct BR livery that it carried in service. Never in LNER apple green ! If it is currently equiped with those horrible smoke deflectors it should be fitted with a double chimney as well! Phil H. Leura. NSW Oz

You have it in one there Phil. The NRM's policy is to have their locomotives as authentic as possible. Flying Scotsman seems to be the only omission, which makes no sense.

Every detail of 4472 at present points to the loco being in BR livery as 60163. If the NRM want it in apple green, because it is more recognisable and iconic, it should be single chimney and no deflectors, not a half cobbled mish mash.
